The Subcontractors Association of Central New York was founded as a local chapter of the American Subcontractors Association (ASA) in 1972. A group of 10 founding members met in various conference rooms to establish the only local organization representing the interests of commercial subcontractors and material suppliers. That mission remains today!

Professional members that would support the business interests of the membership such as accounting firms, insurance agencies and banking were encouraged.

It was determined that having a Chapter Attorney was an essential service to the members. Joseph Lawton, partner, Bond Schoenek & King was selected as the first Chapter Attorney and served for the Chapter’s first 20 years. Upon Joe’s retirement, Terry Pickard, Partner, Byrne, Costello & Pickard was selected as Chapter Attorney, and served for the next 20 years. Zea Wright, Partner, Byrne, Costello & Pickard serves as the current Chapter Attorney.

The membership voted in 2000 to dissolve the ASA relationship, and affiliate with the Empire State Subcontractors Association (ESSA). That relationship continues today.

Membership in ESSA provides members with the assurance that legislative issues important to members and the industry are consistently addressed. There have been many legislative victories over the Chapter’s history.
